As part of the Shiloh Shepherd health initiative all puppies bred by Sound Shilohs are to be Holter monitored. GSD/IVA is an inherited electrical issue within the heart that is found in GSDs and Shilohs. It can cause sudden death in young dogs and has no outward or obvious symptoms. A 24-Hour Holter Monitor test is required to diagnose these conditions. Because the arrhythmia may not occur all the time it is easily missed with typical Ausculation and Echo-cardiograms. Detection can be lifesaving and the condition can be treated.
We hope to one day eliminate this issue in the Shiloh Shepherd. Now it is put into many breeder's contracts for ALL progeny to be tested, to ensure if effected, the puppy begins treatment. The recommended optimal testing age is around 7 mos. All Sound Shiloh families must agree to test their new family member in a timely manner. For info on borrowing a Holter monitor please refer to your puppy packages. ~ Thanks so much for participating in this worthy effort to eradicate sudden death in Shepherds. (Both GSDs & Shiloh Shepherds may have this issue).
